Garry thinks the dolls, which he and Mary can see, are creepy while Mary thinks they are cute (most likely because she made them or at least spent her entire painting-life with them.) Ib has to answer if she thinks the “dolls” which she sees as bunnies, are cute. I think Mary split Garry from her an Ib because of a combination of his age, his time with Ib, and Mary’s own fear.ĭuring the time the three of them were in the “bunny” room, there was an obvious conformation between Mary and Garry, or the starting of the wedge to drive Ib towards one and away from the other. IE: an adult in the world without adults. Or perhaps she knew Garry was older, more sensible and logical. Perhaps it was just pure jealousy and frustration. However, I’m still trying to figure out why Mary would be unfond of Garry during the few rooms the trio were in before the vines split them.

I think she was jealous of the time Ib and Garry spent together prior to her meeting them. I think that Mary knew, of just feared, that if push came to shove, Ib would pick Garry and the real world over her. I don’t think that the Flower of Jealousy blooming as the trio were leaving the Bunny/Doll room was a coincidence. This is her reasons and motivation in a nutshell. She wants to be friends with Ib, to keep Ib there with her forever in the “world with no adults” and she would do anything to do that. Garry is the one who finds out who she really is, who tears her dolls, who pulls Ib from her back to the real world.

Garry is the object blocking her from her goal, and that angers and frustrates her. But her goals, her motivations, are very simple and I believe quite understandable: she doesn’t want to be alone anymore. Well, I do, because she kills Garry, but even with people who have gotten the Promise of Reunion ending, they think shes a evil bitch bent on killing you and everyone you love. I almost don’t understand why people hate her so much. She wanted to get out, to feel the real sun, to eat real food, to meet real people. She wanted a friend, someone to keep her company. She didn’t want to be mean to Ib, she didn’t want to be “evil”. Mary is a simple yet equally complex character. I really love the game Ib for many reasons, one being thus: There’s no ultimately evil antagonist. This is the only warning, read at your own risk. As such, this contains an overwhelming amount of spoilers. It analyzes her character and her actions in the game, not in an attempt to justify her but to explain why I don’t believe that she is “evil” and a “bitch”. The fallowing is a “rant” about my opinions about Mary from Ib.
